Parshall Focuses on Water Quality

Posted: Updated:

The oil boom has impacted towns in Western North Dakota in many different ways.

Parshall, for example, has gone through a population boom that's affected infrastructures, such as their water treatment facility.  But Parshall residents no longer have to worry. The new water treatment plant in Parshall has been up and running for about a year, but it's now running at full capacity.

The $12 million project has the capability of producing 2.5 million gallons of clean water per day.  Dirty water is pulled in from Lake Sakakwea, treated, and is sent to Parshall and the surrounding rural residents on the Fort Berthold Reservation.

"I always say these plants are backwards. The old plants used to take the mud out of the water, these take the water out of the mud.  That's about the way it is.  When it runs through the trains and runs out, the water is super clean. Add a little more chlorine, and it goes into the clear well and it's ready to drink," says Terry Leingang, one of two operators at the Water Treatment Facility.

The typical life span of a water treatment facility is 20 years. With the new technology in the Parshall Plant, it's expected to last even longer
