Businesses Prepare for McQuade

Posted: Updated:

McQuade's has become a staple of the community over the last 38 years. And this weekend, Bismarck welcomes athletes from all over.

"It's a special weekend. It brings a lot of people to town. A lot of bars and restaurants should be very happy. It's a great thing for the economy," says Stacey Keller, Broken Oar.

But not all restaurants reap the benefits of the visitors who come in for the tournament.

"Historically, McQuade tournament has had a negative impact on the Peacock Alley, because a lot of people who come into the state from all over the place don't tend to go downtown. They tend to stay in the fields and have their beverages there," says Dale Zimmerman, Peacock Alley.

Peacock Alley has made some recent changes to its outside seating to help catch visitors eyes.

"I think they all need to come downtown and just check out what's going on 5th Street. I mean, there are places with outdoor seating, and the environment and urban feeling you get while sitting on the sidewalk and enjoying a beverage and dinner is something you can't duplicate anywhere else in town," says Zimmerman.

Business implications aside, most agree the tournament can effect more than just the economy.

"I love playing in it, and I've been playing for 25 years. It's been a part of my life and even before that when my dad played. It's just a great thing for the community," says Keller.

The championship game will take place on Sunday night.
