Tougher DUI Laws Take Effect in July

Posted: Updated:
Starting Monday, July 1st, there will be tougher DUI laws.

Under these new laws, drunk drivers who cause the death of another person can be charged with some very harsh penalties.

They will be charged with a class A felony and could face up to 20 years in prison.

"Word will get out that it is very serious. You will be looking at higher fines and jail time. It's a step forward. It's a step in the right direction. It's long overdue. I'm glad to see it . So, hopefully it will translate into a safer highway system," says Captain Gary Orluck, North Dakota Highway Patrol.

In 2011, there were 6,600 DUI arrests in North Dakota. And, in 2012, 87 people were killed by drunk drivers.
