Suiting Up for Softball

Posted: Updated:

The Sam McQuade Senior Charity Softball Tournament is bringing thousands of people into Bismarck and Mandan. The tournament has always been about supporting charitable organizations. But it is the first time the Special Olympics team is suiting up.

Ray Carlson is playing on the Special Olympics softball team for the first time this year. Him and his teammates say they love their new team jerseys.

"They are nice colors and I like it," said softball player Ray Carlson.

"We love the shirts and stuff. They are nice and cool. And we love it. We are glad we have these. It is my first year having these on," said softball player Danny Friedt.

After seeing the team play without jerseys last year, Mark Weber took it upon himself to donate jerseys to the team to make them feel important.

"They are looking at all these other people coming here in uniforms. They are doing the basically the same thing, but they were doing it in T-shirts. We felt if we gave them a jersey of their own, something they could attach themselves to, that would be more special for them than just coming here," said Mark Weber with TYJA.

Weber was looking forward to today because it was the first time he could see the team in their jerseys.

"It is a real proud moment for us as people and as a company because not enough things are done for these kids and this was simple. I mean all we had to was basically do our business, which is customize apparel, make them something and supposedly they were ecstatic," said Weber.

Now the Special Olympics team can focus on the game and enjoy the tournament.

"Having fun and seeing a lot more people. I am glad to see the people," said Friedt.

"Get out and meet people and make some friends," said Carlson.

You can catch the team playing on Sunday at noon at the Clem Kelley Complex.  The McQuade Tournament runs through Sunday evening.
