Virginian Star Makes Appearance at Mandan Rodeo Days

Posted: Updated:

James Drury is breaking out his cowboy boots and spending some time making appearances, and taking in all that Mandan Rodeo Days has to offer.

"You go to a small town rodeo, you get dirt in your teeth, you know, from all the action that's happening out there," says Drury.

Drury has spent a good portion of his career making the life of a cowboy come alive, and being at Mandan Rodeo Days allows him to reminisce with kids and adults about his time in "The Virginian".

"Every day, when I would go down to go to work, I knew that I was going to be working with somebody wonderful, and of course, that brings your game up and then that brings their game up and it gets to a very high level, indeed," says Drury.

Drury says cast and crew members only had a five day work week to create 71 minutes and 31 seconds of film.

"I would go in to five different sets in one day and have to do my lines in this scene and get that all straight, and then do my lines over here in this scene and get that all straight with the different story, and keep everything in mind. And it was extremely difficult, and one terrific amount of fun," says Drury.

Owners of the Meriwether Trade & Gift Store, Scott and Roma Newton, played a key role in bringing Drury to North Dakota. They say they're excited to have him here.

"It's amazing that we could do this and be part of this celebration with him, you know? Because we don't know when we'll have this opportunity again," says Roma Newton.

For almost a decade, James Drury made the wild west come to life on television, and this weekend, he is bringing some of those memories back to North Dakota.
