Hoeven Hosts Energy Round Table

Posted: Updated:

The President's speech to cut carbon pollution has industry leaders and North Dakota legislators up in arms.

"He is really picking winners and losers and what it amounts to is he is driving up the cost of energy by a third for our consumers so they are going to feel it in their pocketbooks," says Senator John Hoeven.

Hoeven met with leaders in the coal, natural gas and wind industries to discuss how President Obama's plan could impact them. They say the President's proposal could hurt the coal industry and right now cutting coal out of the equation is not possible.

"In a perfect world, if you could keep the lights on 24/7 with solar and wind. We would do that, but it just does not work that way. The wind does not always blow, and the sun does not always shine. So, you have to have the diversity to keep the lights on," says Basin Electric CEO Andrew Serri.

"One of our industry leaders said today, 'You know, the administration has talked about clean coal technology, but what they are proposing is not feasible. It will prevent development rather than empower development. Let us go back and show them what is feasible,'" says Hoeven.

Hoeven says he would like to create an energy policy in Washington that mirrors the diverse energy resources in North Dakota including coal, wind, solar, natural gas and oil.
