Flower Bulbs May Be Dangerous for Pets

Posted: Updated:

With the wet and rainy spring, some North Dakotan gardeners didn't get a chance to plant their tulip bulbs.

Now, the bulbs that didn't make it into the ground are sitting around, which could cause serious problems if your dog gets a hold of one of them.

From daffodils to tulips, dogs may be tempted to eat a bulb, but toxins are concentrated in them, making them very dangerous for dogs.

And depending on the size of the dog, the reactions can vary.

"They can, you know, really eat the plant and probably be sick, you know," says Dr. Louis Pinkerton.  "They get some vomiting and diarrhea and don't feel very good.  But, eating the bulbs is where a lot of the toxins are concentrated.  So, eating the bulb is where the deaths occur from."

If your dog eats a bulb, contact your local vet or call the Animal Poison Control Center at 1-888-426-4435 for immediate assistance.
