Adventurers Get Medieval in Bismarck

Posted: Updated:

It's a race like no other. Participants in the Medieval Rush 5K are getting their guts, glory, honor and medievalism tested on a course filled with grueling obstacles.

"We have a lot of mud pits, a lot of hills that you have to climb that are full of mud, " says Tanner Schweitzer, founder of Medieval Rush. "Also, a lot of barbed wire on the course, as well. What I'm most proud of is the guillotine gorge, where they have to go through a maze of barbed wire."

And even knowing there is barbed wire needing to be avoided during the race, some runners aren't sweating the small stuff.

"It's alright," says runner Dani Taylor. "I'm a farm kid, so I'm used to it."

Schweitzer explains how he got the idea for creating the Medieval Rush

"I'm used to building courses, building things, and I was like, 'Oh, I would totally love to build a huge, huge course.' And the bigger the course you have, the more people you have. So, it's just been a phenomenal, phenomenal ride."

This is Schweitzer's second year doing the race and he says the response and turnout has been amazing.

"It's just loads of fun," says Schweitzer. "Lots of work, lots of preparation. It's all coming down to today."

The event offers participants the opportunity to participate in games like tug of war and mechanical bull riding. Even the little ones watching mom and dad race are gearing up for some of the activities.

"My favorite part is after the race, riding the bull, so I could use my stuffed animal, Bart," says Nick Pruington.

Along with games and dancing, participants can dress up in funny costumes. So naturally, there has to be a contest.

"We're ready for this," says Team Sweaty Girls. "We're going to win the costume contest."

The Medieval Rush is a one of a kind event filled with fun and comradery. Participants have the chance to go medieval, while still working on their fitness.
