National Guard Furlough Takes Effect

Posted: Updated:

Starting today offices within the North Dakota National Guard have been a little bare.

"It's been quiet come some offices. For other offices it's been pretty busy. The work never stops," says Lt. Col. Warren Pauling.

But the work is getting a little more difficult to complete. For the next eleven weeks each guard member is required to take one day off of work each week, unpaid.

"It's twenty percent of my paycheck. So depending on how well you plan ahead financially for it, knowing it was coming, you'll either be living from paycheck to paycheck or some I'm guessing will probably end up dipping into their savings. To cover some of those bills if they are that close," says Lt. Col. Pauling.

While an individual is on a furlough day, they aren't allowed to come into the office or do any work from home. And it's  already created some challenges.

"If you had a scheduled meeting where they were a significant part of it, you're ending up having your replacement come in, which they're very capable of, but it's just those nuances that you have to adjust and make some different schedule changes."

But while the sequester will bring some challenges, Pauling says the guard is still ready to deploy or assist if any natural disasters were to happen.
