Gaffaneys Gets Demolished

Posted: Updated:

The buildings around Gaffaneys also suffered some damage as a result of the fire.

One law office had to be evacuated today because of potential dangers.

The law firm building and Gaffney's building were attached, and that created a problem for the law firm.

"It has smoke and water damage in it. Then there's another section in that building continuing on to the east that had smoke damage to that," says Chief Alan Hanson, Williston Fire Department.

But that wasn't the only problem. The law firm is one story, but Gaffaney's is two stories and has a damaged structure.

"That has a potential of failing. What we're looking at is the facade may come down. If that comes down, it could collapse a roof," adds Hanson.

A risk that leaves first responders with only one choice, putting condemned signs in front of the building. The next step in the process was to figure out what to do with the building. After some thought, Chief Hanson and the building's owners decided to tear down the entire building. The whole process took around 2.5 hours, and crews were able to get the entire building down without damaging any other building. Now, comes the investigation.

"You never know. It could be hours, days, weeks. It just depends on when we can get in there, and when that basement gets clear. We're going to look for any indications of where it started, that's our goal," Hanson added.

Hanson says the investigation probably won't start until sometime next week, because of the amount of debris in the basement.
