Hay Farmers Race Against Mother Nature

Posted: Updated:

North Dakota farmers are racing against Mother Nature to make hay while the sun shines. Until last week, dry and sunny days were few and far between.

"We really lucked out this last week.  We didn't get any rain, and thank God, we got it cut and we got it baled up with no rain so that's a blessing," says Thomas Schmidt.

A brief break in the wet weather pattern gave many farmers a chance to cut some exceptional grass and alfalfa.

"Probably the best hay crop I've ever cut, at least what I remember.  We've just got to get it all done. You know, we had that rain, and of course the quality was really good, now we just have to get after it," says Dick Tokach.

Thomas Schmidt worked night and day to cut and bale all his hay.

"I finally got some hay up without any rain on it."

Even with all the planting and hay cutting problems rain has caused, North Dakota farmers say they would like even more moisture.

"We could use another shot of rain. It's hard to believe after we get this first cutting off, we could use another inch or so," says Tokach.

The second cutting of hay will take place in mid-to-late August, and if that crop is as good as the one farmers just took off, providing feed for livestock this winter won't be a problem.
