Heritage Center Expansion Update

Posted: Updated:

It has been a project two years in the making and construction crews are still working hard to complete the $51 million addition to the state heritage center. Here is a look inside at the new changes.

The walls are up and elements of the new heritage center are starting to take shape.

"It is very exciting. Our main gallery that many visitors are going to be familiar with is just seeing its final phases of demolition. It is a big empty room now and so we are starting all over with new carpets, lights and paint and all new exhibits as well," said Expansion & New Initiatives Coordinator Claudia Berg.

The 97,000 square foot addition will add three galleries to showcase the chronological history of North Dakota.

"It is a wonderful opportunity to bring up more objects from the collections, get into the very recent stories, the current history that is happening in North Dakota and connect it all the way back to that fossil fuel and fossil history story in North Dakota," said Berg.

Berg says the big glass box which is a northern lights atrium is a huge focal point to the heritage center. But she says people are also impressed with the copper finishes.

"They have been very impressed. I mean the copper is quite a wow piece and it is a very unique thing for a building as well," said Berg.

The Historical Society plans to open late this year, with the big unveiling coming in November 2014 for the state's 125th anniversary.  The Heritage Center will also have an opportunity for outdoor programming at a new amphitheater they are constructing on the south side of the building.
