The Scarlet Gypsy Traveling Boutique

Posted: Updated:

Therissa Heit worked years as a stylist and fashion retailer, then she saw a trend taking off in fashion magazines: mobile boutiques.

So, she bought a Ford transit truck last winter, and transformed it into The Scarlet Gypsy.

"Scarlet is basically my red hair and the red truck," Heit says of the name, "and gypsy is just that we just travel all over- nomadic."

Complete with a fitting room, drawers and racks full of clothing, jewelry and purses, Heit says the Scarlet Gypsy caters to those looking for trendy looks.

"Statement pieces, colors, sparkles, and things that you could wear to work or go out on vacation."

On the business end, she says running a shop out a truck sometimes has it's limits, like the weather.

"If it's gonna rain, or if it's going to be too hot. I make those office days"

But, the ability to travel also has it's advantages.

"If it's a beautiful day, like today," Heit says, "I just kind of find a place where a lot of traffic will be or people will be around and post it on facebook and head out."

Part of her new-age business model relies heavily on technology.

"Social media has been really important in what I do, for one: they'll know where I'll be, and for two: they can see my products and see what the scarlet gypsy is all about."

The Scarlet Gypsy can be booked for private parties and events, and tracked throughout town via Facebook and Twitter @TheScarletGypsy.

Heit started up The Scarlet Gypsy in May focusing on Bismarck-Mandan, but will be traveling to the State Fair in Minot to sell her wares.
