Williston Residents Find Ways to Beat the Heat

Posted: Updated:

Eckert Youth Pool was packed this afternoon as temperatures climbed into the upper 90's. But out at Lake Sakakawea, it was a different story.

"Its kind of a lost, unknown area out here, people don't even realize its here," says Louis and Clark park manager Greg Corcoran.

Corcoran says people often forget about the lake on weekdays.

"We're in the middle of the week, but wait until this weekend, then we start filling up. We've got probably upwards of 500 to 600 people out here on the weekend, and it just gets absolutely phenomenal out here in the marina area."

Back at the pool, extra lifeguards were on duty, paying special attention to heat exhaustion.

"We're not just watching the water, we're watching everything around the pool deck as well. We have to make sure everybody stays cool," says aquatics supervisor Lindsey Peterson.

Peterson says three lifeguards are usually on duty, but as pool capacity climbs, extra eyes are needed.

"We may add one toward the end by the diving block, and then we may add a guard that walks the pool just to add a precautionary measure and safety item for all those youngsters that have come out today."

Out at the lake, Corcoran says his staff is also trained to look for heat-related problems.

"There's enough coolness out here, and there's always a breeze, like they say the ocean breeze coming in and that cools everyone off. But, we keep an eye on it because people are hiking in the hills and everything so we do watch that because they can get overheated. But we've got a lot of vegetation out there. The plants are really green, and that kind of keeps everything cool like an air conditioner."

The forecast calls for warm temperatures throughout the weekend, so both bodies of water are expected to be busy.
