House Passes Farm Bill

Posted: Updated:

The U.S. House of Representatives passed a farm bill today. But unlike one they failed to pass last month, this version is missing a key component of past farm bills, food stamps.

Since the farm bill was created in 1933, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance program, otherwise known as food stamps, has been part of it. But today's vote separated the programs.

The executive director of the North Dakota Democratic Party released a statement saying republicans who voted for the bill weakened the possibility of a comprehensive farm bill passing out of both chambers. However, Congressman Kevin Cramer says it was the only way to get a farm program passed out of the House.

"I'm not one bit afraid to take it on. I like, in fact, the opportunity to defend and to argue on behalf of good agriculture policy apart from other distractions like the welfare program," says Congressman Cramer.

"If nothing happens with food stamps in this congress, the food stamp program as it is currently structured will go forward, So, the House, which wanted even more dramatic reforms in food stamps compared to the Senate, which had a modest $4 billion reduction in the food stamp program. None of those reforms will be realized," says Senator Heidi Heitkamp.

The bill passed 216 to 208. No democrats voted for the bill.
