Heat Affects Pets

Posted: Updated:

People aren't the only ones that can feel the effects of the rising mercury. Our pets are just as susceptible to overheating as we are.

Pet owners should never leave their animals alone in a parked vehicle, especially not on a hot, sunny day. Don't force your pet to exercise on extremely hot days. Try to walk them in the early morning or evening when the temperature has dropped. And if you have a pet with a long coat, shaving their fur to a one-inch length can help prevent over-heating.

"Sometimes dogs will have so much of that drive to be working and playing fetch, they don't have the common sense to go lay down when they should.  They have such a desire to please the owner.  It's another area as pet owners we need to be the responsible ones and make decisions for the dogs," says veterinarian Ron Thunshelle, Pinkerton Animal Hospital.

If you suspect your pet is suffering from heat exhaustion, bring them to a cool, shaded area and contact your veterinarian Immediately .
