Good Works: Hair Day

Posted: Updated:

This is what it looks like every Friday morning at the St. Vincent Care Center. It's beauty day.

"Oh boy, everybody gets up and rushes down here to be first for your hairdo. You're never first. You always have to wait in line," says client Delores Schuchard.

From about eight until eleven, about thirty ladies line up for their turn with a helper with a curling iron in hand.

"I know how good it feels to have your hair done. It makes my day, and that was one of those things I've always wanted to do after I retired," says volunteer stylist Diane Krupinsky.

They don't do shampoos, cuts, and colors. They leave that to the professionals. Of the stylists I talked to, two were retired secretaries and the other is an addiction counselor.

So again, no professional stylists here.

"We're just doing our best. And don't look at our hair, either!" says volunteer stylist Donna Roethler.

The clients can't do this for themselves any more. Their hands and their eyes just don't work the way they used to. But they sure love the compliments they hear when they leave the beauty shop.

But they don't cruise by the gentlemen's rooms.

"Pshh! There aren't many gentlemen to do that with," says client Priscilla Eckroth.
