Miniature Golf Takes Over Library

Posted: Updated:

No need to use your inside voices at the Bismarck Public Library Friday. It's transformed into a miniature golf course, and it's not your average golf course.

"It's a library theme miniature golf. There are nine holes as in miniature golf, but each one of these has either a book or a movie theme," says Bismarck Public Library Director of Teen Services, Kathy Vander Vorst.

Among the holes: Tom Sawyer, Darth Vader and Princess Leia, and Robin Hood. If that isn't enough, even the characters come to life.

"Robin Hood is running around the library looking for unsuspecting victims to take back to her forest," says Hailey Wanner, who volunteered to dress up as Princess Leia.

Score with Some Books is a free event  open to teens looking for something to do during the summer and get reacquainted with the library.

"It's different," says Abigail Wu. "Most people aren't used to having loud music and kids running around at the library, but it proves that the library is very useful and a good place to come."

The holes, designed and built by volunteers using books and other materials wasn't a walk in the park either.

"It's a challenge," says Gunner Jaegen. "If you like just get out, it's like you make one mistake and it bounces off the books."

About a hundred teens showed up, and they say it was a pretty cool experience.

"We appreciate it," says Hannah Tangen. "It's really nice for the community of younger people to come together and have fun at the library."

This is the second year mini-golf has taken over the library, and they hope to do it again annually.

Library mini-golf was made possible by volunteers and sponsors including Verizon, WalMart, and Central Market.
