Beware of Sandals

Posted: Updated:

It is summertime. For many of us that means shedding the bulky shoes and reaching for sandals or flip flops. But beware, you could be harming your feet in the process.

"I wear flip flops all the time, unless I have to wear dress shoes," said Laurie Foerderer.

Laurie Foerderer is an avid lover of sandals and flip flops because she says they are comfortable.

"They do not rub my feet, they do not hurt. They just feel good," said Foerderer.

And she is not alone in her love of footwear.

"They are easy to put on and take off. I do not have to worry about bending over and tying my shoes. They are just quick," said Heidi Erickson.

But doctors say wearing sandals or flip flops that are not supportive can cause major damage in the long run.

"If you are not wearing supportive shoes and you are on your feet a lot, that is when a lot of people get that aching tired feet feeling and that is what you get before a more serious foot problem or ankle problem starts," said Dr. Brian Gale of Dakota Foot & Ankle Clinic.

Dr. Gale says about 80% of shoes in a shoe store are no supportive enough, so the odds are stacked against the average person. But he recommends testing the shoes before you purchase them.

"So right in the middle of the shoe right where your arch is, we want to bend that shoe and see if it bends. And you can see that I am giving it a lot of force and really it is not bending," said Gale.

Dr. Gale also says wearing less supportive shoes is fine when you are doing light activity. But if you are on your feet all day or walking for a long time, it is best to opt for more support.  Dr. Gale also recommends purchasing an inexpensive over the counter insoles for your shoes for more support and shock absorption.
