Bismarck Couple Pleads Not Guilty to Child Abuse Charges

Posted: Updated:

A Bismarck couple accused of locking three boys in a basement for extended periods of time has pleaded not guilty to two felony child abuse charges.

Kacie Schaeffer, 29, and Trevor Runningbear, 32, appeared in court this afternoon.

Court documents say Schaeffer's nine-year-old son told a school social worker that the couple abused him and his brothers, ages three and six. Documents show the boy said they were locked in the basement of their home on East Indiana Avenue when they got home from school and all day on non-school days, until the following day.

According to court documents, the two older boys said they were physically abused by their mother with a fly swatter and a belt. Court documents also say Runningbear hit and kicked the youngest child.

The abuse is said to have taken place between February 13 and May 10 this year, when it was reported.

The couple's next court appearance will be on August 19.
