Roads Closed as Mandan Police Investigate Possible Pipe Bomb

Posted: Updated:

A Mandan mail carrier spotted what she thought was a pipe bomb in a mailbox this afternoon. Police responded to the corner of Main Street and Collins Avenue at about 5:20 p.m., and they called in a bomb squad from Bismarck.

"As soon as we were able to get word about what might be in there, we closed down the roadways, stopped traffic and notified the business people on Main," says Lt. Rick Schaaf, Mandan Police Department.

Streets were blocked off for about 4 hours, while the bomb squad carefully removed the item, placed it on the ground and hit it with a water cannon. Fortunately, it was only a broken flashlight.

Police are trying to figure out why it was placed in a mailbox.
