Expansion Project Coming to a Close

Posted: Updated:

Construction on one of North Dakota's most popular Cultural Centers is almost complete.  Rene Thibault has the details on the Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center expansion.

"We love the fact that people that are new to North Dakota are coming and enjoying our rich cultural history, enjoying our sites, and it doesn't matter if you've lived here for 80 years on the family farm or 8 days in a crew camp, you can enjoy all that we have," said David Borlaug, President of the Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center.

And very soon, there will be an even bigger opportunity to experience North Dakota's rich culture.  The Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center in Washburn is nearing completion on a 9000 square foot expansion.

"We have got a world class collection of books on Lewis and Clark, on North Dakota, on the American West, we're going to put that in an environmentally safe and secure library, that will be made available not only to the general public, but especially to scholars, to authors," added Borlaug.

The 5.5 Million Dollar expansion project includes a new rare book and resource library, large deck over-looking the Missouri River, added gallery space, and a 180 seat event center.

"Somebody told us recently, one of the scholars, he said you know David you've always been the center of the Lewis and Clark trail, you've got a beautiful facility, now you're becoming the intellectual center of the Lewis and Clark trail, and we're pretty proud of that," stated Borlaug.

Throughout the year and a half of construction, staff at the Interpretive Center has put a focus on continuing to serve the public.

"Obviously you don't want to disappoint somebody that came all the way from Vermont, or Texas, or even Bismarck to see what we have to offer, and say 'Sorry we're shut down,' so we've maintained all of our operations," Borlaug said.

And the expansion project puts the Lewis and Clark Center in a unique position.

"All across America, museums right now are contracting, they're not expanding.  That's not the story in North Dakota, that's not the story of the Lewis and Clark Trail.  We're very dynamic," concluded Borlaug.

Construction at the Lewis and Clark Center is expected to be completed in August.

The grand opening for the Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center expansion is set for September 14th.  The Center is open Monday through Friday 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM.  For more information visit the www.FortMandan.com.
