Police Offer Citizen's Police Academy

Police officers go through months of intensive training before they're ready to hit the streets.
And now, anyone interested in learning the ropes can get hands-on experience.

The Bismarck Police Department is accepting applications for this year's Citizen's Police Academy. The ten-week long course gives participants an up-close, hands-on look at the department. Classes are three hours long and meet one night a week.

"We think it's important, because we'd like to dispel some of the myths of the police department, invite people to get to know the officers and see the inside workings of the police department, what officers do.  They ride along with an officer," says Pat Renz, Bismarck Police Department.

Participants also shoot hand guns at the shooting range and take part in simulated activities to get a realistic understanding of what officers come across every day.
