Art and chemistry instructors from across the country are at BSC this week learning how teachers can make the two subjects work together in the classroom.
"There's a lot of chemistry involved in the materials that artists use as well as chemistry involved in the conservation and restoration of art and art works that goes on," says facilitator and workshop founder Dr. Pat Hill.
The National Science Foundation sponsors the Chemistry in Art Workshop and only picks 20 participants a year.
"We decide based on what do they want to do. Why do they want to come to the workshop? Many of them want to come to the workshop in order to develop a course, either of their own interest or their school wants a course for non-science majors that would be interesting and get students excited about physical sciences," says Dr. Hill.
Chemistry professors say the days are long, but they have a new appreciation for artists.
"We've been doing dying. And so many things can mess up with dying, you would be amazed. I was kind of pleased and amazed how much chemistry there is involved in it," says chemistry teacher Joe Lomax.
They also get to make cool stuff.
"My wife Suzanne, I made her a little bracelet. I come on a workshop, and she gets a bracelet and little things," says Lomax.
The workshop lasts all week, participants will also study ancient and modern art materials and discuss ways to introduce basic chemistry concepts to undergraduates.
