Police Investigate Copper Wire Thefts

Posted: Updated:

Williston Police are investigating four significant copper wire thefts over the past week.

Detectives say a suspect or group of suspects has been using various saws to steal hundreds of feet of copper wire from local businesses.

Thick strands of copper wire can sell for well over $10 per foot. These four thefts alone total over $40,000 worth of stolen metal.

Detectives say some of the wires are roughly an inch thick.

"It's a heavy gauge copper," says Detective Cory Collings. "So, it's not a light thing. We're talking about 1,400, 1,500 feet, another for 400 or 500 feet. You know, it's quite a strand."

Collings says he does believe the thefts are related. He says scrap yards receive so much scrap metal on a daily basis that linking sales to the stolen wire is proving to be very difficult.
