Life-Saving Award

Posted: Updated:

June 16, 2013 local law enforcement responded to plane crash west of the Minot Air Force Base. Deputy Ann M. Millerbernd from the Ward County Sheriff's Department was the first officer on the scene, and today she receives the North Dakota Peace Officers Association Life-Saving Award.

Millerbernd gave directions to the exact location of the crash to other responders. She located the pilot and obtained his vitals and stabilized his substantial injuries, all while talking with him and keeping him calm and aware of the situation. The pilot survived the crash and is still recovering.

"From the moment of making contact with him I knew right away how serious the situation was. I saw the plane, I saw what was left of the plane, I saw the extent of his injuries and I'm not for one second trying to say that I saved that man because it was a group effort. But talking to him and learning about his life made me just continue to want to work with him, and I didn't want to lose him," says Millerbernd.

Deputy Millerbernd is also a trained EMT, and carried her medical bag through the muddy area to get to the pilot.
