More Housing Available in Killdeer

Posted: Updated:

The population growth in the western part of the state has exceeded the rate of housing construction.

And that has made it difficult for low income families as rental costs go up and up.

Killdeer is in the heart of oil activity, and housing is desperately needed.

"Keeping rural communities thriving is so important to our agency. They are the back bone of North Dakota," says NDHFA Director of Housing Jolene Kline.

Half of the 24 unit complex is reserved for low income tenants and with help from the state, there will be more projects like this popping up to accommodate the growth.

"26 projects scattered around North Dakota but the majority are in Western North Dakota. They are in communities ranging from Williston to Dickinson to Minot and smaller towns like Grenora, Lignite, and Beach," Kline adds.

Many of the new tenants will be law enforcement officers who struggle to find living arrangements in oil country.

Highway Patrol Trooper Sgt. Tom Iverson says, "It means a lot that we can help recruit and retain troopers and different law enforcement personnel to be up in oil country and have them know that they can find and live in affordable, quality housing."

The property developer is a Killdeer native, and he says he's glad to help his community.

"This is an exciting time for us. There are challenges, but we've learned to work as a community to overcome those challenges and we're really proud of projects like this," says Donald Hedger of Killdeer Mountain Manufacturing.

Prairie Gold Apartments are on Rodeo Drive in Killdeer.
