Tech Talk: The Evolution of Gaming

Posted: Updated:

From PCs to gaming consoles, video games are more popular than ever.

The PS4 and XBOX ONE are on the way. And they're expected to be much more than superior gaming consoles.

"You will be able to watch sports, interact with friends. They have motion controls. Anything they can cram into it, they are going to try to do. And also, every new console comes with new graphics, new sound, better control, things like that. So, those will all be in the new consoles coming out," says Rock 30 Games manager Tanner Dietz.

"Now there's a product called the Occulus Rift coming out, where you put on a headset. And if you move your head left or right, the screen within these glasses will move left or right with you. So, you're in the game," says gamer Jordan Axtman.

There's even a prototype out there that allows you to walk and run within the game. But while the technology has improved, some gamers still appreciate the challenges of the past.

"Some of them were very unforgiving. You know, there were always a lot of tricks to things, things like Donkey Kong. As a kid it seemed like an impossible game to beat, and when you did (beat it) there was this big sense of achievement," says Axtman.

Some players will pay a lot of money for those games. Check out this Super Nintendo game. It sells for $225. With a box, it can go for as much as $1,000.

"A lot of it depends on the rarity of the game. So, if they didn't release it in the United States, or they did, but didn't produce a lot of them, that will drive the game up, too. And then, how popular that game is. A lot of the games that everyone remembers to play, like the Marios, the Zeldas, the Metroids, those kind of games are going to go up in price, because everyone remembers playing those games," says Dietz.

Gamers looking forward to the next wave of technology won't have to wait long. The PS4 and XBOX ONE will be out this fall.
