Skin Cream Causes Allergic Reaction

Posted: Updated:

When you go to put on your favorite lotion or cream, you may think you're doing your skin a favor by clearing up blemishes or dry skin. But, some dermatologists say a few of the ingredients may actually be doing more harm than good.

Many of the over-the-counter health and beauty products contain formaldehyde and non-formaldehyde preservatives. These ingredients can cause people to have an allergic reaction, like rashes, swelling, itching, hives and redness.

While it is almost impossible to avoid buying products with these ingredients, there are ways to reduce your chances of have a negative reaction.

"You want to look for things [like] simple ingredients. The less ingredients, the less chances you're going to have a reaction to something because there by virtue, there's less things in there," says Trinity Health Family Nurse Practitioner Ann Welch.

Welch recommends using products with little to no fragrance.
