Family Focus: Social Media in the Classroom

Posted: Updated:

Social media is here to stay, and many teachers across the country are using the technology to help motivate their students.

Pew Research Center's Internet and American Life Project found that 78% of teachers agree that digital technologies encourage student creativity and personal expression.

"Well, we know for a fact that in today's world technology has had a huge influence on our kids, and they're growing up with that, what they're doing all day, they're very connected all the time. So, to integrate technology in a positive way is probably a critical piece for education," says Cindy Mau, Jim Hill Middle School Principal.

The study sites one English teacher in Texas that allows her students to post their essays to social media sites like Twitter, and believes that it encourages the students to do better, especially when the work is seen by other classmates.

Mau says she does have some teachers that integrate social media in their lessons, and it's a progressive moment that will continue.

"We do know that kids love to do tech projects anytime they're related and there is a lot of research to suggest that it enhances their projects and their ability to get info. We have to go with the flow and use it the positive way while at the same time making sure we're all educated and doing it in a wise and effective way," says Mau.

Mau says learning social media may help students perform better from a business perspective.

"I think because we're a global society now in the business world, for kids to be competitive they need to have presentation skills and the ability to communicate with masses and be tech savvy. The important part also, as an educator, we want to create digital citizenship and we do have a pretty strong program for that in Minot Public Schools and we want to continue to educate parents, students, as well as staff to efficiently use technology to enhance education but at the same time be wise and prudent with what we're doing," says Mau.

Mau says when integrating social media in schools, it's important to tread lightly and be careful for safety reasons.
