Fort Lincoln Trolley

Posted: Updated:

A bell rings to signal the approach of the Fort Lincoln Trolley at a crossing in Mandan. The trolley goes from third street to Fort Lincoln at the top of the hour and returns on the half hour.

Jim Beck says, "It's just fun. It's enjoyable. Except when the tracks wash out or things like that."

The nine-mile ride attracts a lot of visitors.

Beck adds, "We get a lot of out-of-staters. We get a lot of family reunion-type things. People like it-- going down to tracks. We run about 12 miles an hour. So, you'll end up seeing a few deer on the way. We have our favorites down in the park. They're really tame. It's almost like we bring them out on cue."

By taking the trolley, visitors get an up close look at nature.

"People are very interested in the wildlife that they see. We have a lot of does with their fawn. Weather can be interesting sometimes. People love to go down to the Park. Fort Lincoln Park is a beautiful are to visit. I guess they just enjoy it. We have a lot of local people that just like to come and go for a relaxing ride," says trolley driver Pat Geiger.

Even the trolley drivers enjoy being outside.

"I love driving the trolley. I started this about, I believe, 6 years ago. When I first started, I used to have another business at home, actually. So I'd be in my office from 6 until noon everyday an I'd be out here. It was just beautiful getting out on the track and in the open air," adds Geiger.

The trolley attendance ranges from a couple of people to whole cars full on any day of the week.
