Amtrak Derailed near Williston

Posted: Updated:

An Amtrak passenger train derailed Monday night near Williston.

An Amtrak spokesman says the Empire Builder Train Eight left Seattle on July 28th. It struck a bulldozer at a private highway crossing about 20 miles west of Williston at about 7:30 on Monday night.

The front wheels of the lead locomotive came off the track. The passenger cars were not damaged.

There were 299 passengers on the train, which is down from an earlier estimate of 325. No passengers were hurt, but two locomotive engineers were taken to a hospital with minor injuries.

UPDATE (7:45 a.m.): The driver of the bulldozer has died. The North Dakota Highway Patrol says a 45-year-old man was driving the bulldozer when it was struck by the train. He was ejected from the vehicle. The man was airlifted to Mercy Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
