Inside Business: Roots Boutique and Salon

Posted: Updated:

If you visit Bismarck's newest hair salon expecting to find a typical hairdresser or a Floyd's Barber Shop, you might discover a lot more than you anticipated. Store owners Scott and Carol Markovic wanted to give a  modern look to what can often be considered a routine business.

"We are a very contemporary boutique, very classy.  You're going to have timeless pieces here, you'll have some trend.  But a mid- to upper-range for pricing," says Carol.

But Roots Boutique and Salon is about more than clothing. It's like nothing else in the area. It's a boutique that combines clothing and accessories with a salon. That concept came from the Markovic's daughter, Morgan.

"I was finally ready to be on my own and do the whole booth rental thing. So we just decided to combine both of our businesses," says Morgan.

She came up with the idea of opening her own salon when she was in cosmetology school, and she's pleased that its been a success.

"For me, it doesn't feel like I'm working.  It feels like I'm with my friends and we're having fun.  I'm here when I want to be here so it's just fun to be around here," says Morgan.

The family-owned business offers booth rentals to professional stylists who provide a range of salon services, from haircuts to makeup, spray tanning, and nails. Men are welcome, and even though the boutique presently features only women's clothing and accessories, the guys can always pick up a little something for their better half. And both sides of the store compliment each other nicely.

"You do have your clientele that's coming in to have their hair done and they end up, versus having to wait those 5 to 10 minutes, you find them shopping," says Carol.

The mother-daughter duo say the experience has been great, and they are looking forward to growing the future of their one of a kind store.
