Sports Spotlight: Bismarck Americans

Posted: Updated:

Most baseball diamonds around the capital city sit empty this late in the summer. The exception to that rule is for a team called the Bismarck Americans, a group of 10-year-olds headed to the Cal Ripken World Series.

"It felt really good. I was surprised. It just felt really good and surprised me," says Cru Walker.

"We just play our game and when we do that I guess something just clicks in us and we play really well," says Jace Hanson.

"We've had these boys since they've been nine and they've bought into the concept of playing the game the right way.  At this point it's fun to see them rewarded for that," says Bob Schulte.

The reward is a trip to Florida this week and a chance to face some of the top 10-year-old teams in the country, but all that won't change what the team from Bismarck is all about.

"Not to steal a thing from Hoosiers but the mound is the same height, the bases are still 60 feet and they still got to throw it across the plate, so we're going to take that same approach and it is exciting and that's what will make this fun," says Schulte.

As a ten year old, baseball is still all about having fun, but that doesn't mean the Americans aren't dreaming of winning a World Series title.  According to Reece Barnhardt and Jace Hanson, the recipe for achieving that isn't very complicated.

"Can't make that many errors and just play hard," says Reece Barnhardt.

"We're going to have to play the way we've always played the whole season and just have confidence in each other," says Hanson.

And what the players are looking forward to most about the experience goes well beyond winning.

"Just going to Florida and playing baseball," says Walker.

"Playing teams from different regions and getting to know different people," says Hanson.

"It will be fun.  It will be really fun," says Barnhardt.
