Heitkamp Meets with Lions Club

Posted: Updated:

Congress is on a five week break and Senator Heidi Heitkamp spent part of that time meeting with members of the Bismarck Lion's Club to talk about how things are going in D.C.

Senator Heitkamp says there are two major pieces of legislation still waiting in limbo. One of them is the Federal Farm Bill. Versions were passed out of both chambers earlier this year but they look very different.

The House took out the supplemental food and nutrition program, also known as food stamps, out of the bill and say they plan to deal with the issue separate from the Farm Bill.

The two versions of the bill have still NOT gone to a conference committee to work out the differences.

"I would like to believe that people are fed up, people who are serving, are fed up with not getting their job done. Hopefully, we'll be able to come to some kind of compromise. But there's a lot of disagreement between the Senate and the House version and reconciling those outside of conference committee is going to be very difficult," says Sen. Heidi Heitkamp.

The federal budget is also still in limbo, we'll have more on that coming up on the evening report.
