Prairie Rose Elementary Expands

Posted: Updated:

Since May of 2009, enrollment in Dickinson public schools has increased by 380 students. Prairie Rose Elementary School will add some much needed spots for more students.

"The district has positioned itself for growth and we as a district are estimating that we will grow this fall compared to last year by 230 and 250 students," says assistant superintendent Vince Reep.

While the students arrive next week, teachers are already at school preparing their classrooms and they couldn't be happier to be leading a new era.

"I am so excited because I get to pave the way. I don't have to fill anyone else's shoes. It's mine, I get to decide what to do," says music specialist Kayla Kilwein.

Now this year at Prairie Rose, there will be three kindergarten and first grade classes, two second grade and third grade classes, and three fourth grade classes, but administration decided to go without a fifth grade class this year.

"We felt that to move students who were currently 4th graders last year up to the new school just for one year and then all of our 6th graders to the Bird center, we felt that it wasn't student friendly," says Reep.

Prairie Rose is also equipped with brand new interactive technology for the students.

"It's going to be a lot of fun, we've got these beautiful smart boards, interactive white boards that got a lot of programs that come with it that the kids love because they actually get to do it. We're also going to do a lot of drums and percussions and stuff," says Kilwein.
