Lutheran Social Services and the North Dakota Finance Agency are helping out residents in Tioga.
Today, the two companies opened two new apartments that were built to give long time residents an affordable place to stay.
Affordable housing is a seemingly never ending struggle throughout western North Dakota. But more units are coming online, including the Nordic Hill Apartments in Tioga. The rooms are income based and range from 325 to 670 per month.
"The majority of them are long term people. Those are the people that we want to keep in the community that could have been forced out of the community because their rents were rising," said North Dakota Housing Finance Agency Director Jolene Kline.
The North Dakota Housing Finance Agency and Bremer Bank funded Nordic Hills.
There are 26 apartments, and tenants can use housing vouchers.
"It will remain affordable for 40 years, is the term that we have on it, so it's long term affordable housing that will be serving the community," said Director of Lutheran Social Services Jessica Thomasson.
Across from the Nordic Hills Complex are the Juniper Ridge Apartments, and there are 10 rooms in the building.
"To be able to provide some affordable housing for this area, it's key to this area. We've got so much growth going on we need places for people to live," said North Dakota Energy Impact Coordinator Rory Nelson.
Juniper Ridge is also income based, and apartments will range from 605 to 797 per month. The entire project has been three years in the making, and will be home to mostly long term residents of Tioga. But some new comers will be moving in too.
"Those new comers, give them an option to get out of a crew camp or a temporary housing situation, bring their families to the state, and make them permanent of our state," Kline added.
Lutheran Social Services also opened another apartment complex in Belfield.
