Family Focus: Motivational Speaker Comes to Minot

Posted: Updated:

Youth speaker Gabe Salazar travels all over the world to speak to teens, hoping to motivate them to live to their full potential.

"It's about dreaming big, and it's developing rules and setting up patterns for their life. If you want to be successful, a lot of it is about who you hang around with, so if you want to be successful you have to hang around with successful people," says Salazar.

Salazar uses high energy and comedy to keep students listening, while using his upbringing as his motivation.

"There was a period in my life where all we owned was a station wagon, and I can go from that to living in Los Angeles, right over the cliffs, over the water because of education, finding mentors in my life, and dreaming big. So, that's what I want to talk to kids about this week," says Salazar.

"He's a kid version of Kevin Hart, let's say that, that's how he is. You're sitting there like, I can't believe he just said that, but I will always remember that," says Dechelle Roby, Minot sophomore.

But it's not just teens he wants to get through to, its parents. Salazar wants them to be aware of what he calls ‘springboard opportunities.'

"When you're watching television and there's an abuse issue, these are moments to process with your students. When you're watching it, and there's bullying, these are moments to process. So, I think parents should find these moments throughout the day, throughout their life and keep the communication going, because when the communication stops with parents that is a very dark moment," says Salazar.

Two Minot sophomores from the Minot Air Force Base youth program, encourage families to listen because of what they see everyday at school.

Kids have to open up to their parents, it might be very hard. Someone will be broken down emotionally; you can't eat, sleep, barely breathe without hurting, if you don't take the steps to open up, your parents can't," says Morgan Leamer, Minot sophomore.

"I would suggest that they just look out for their kids," says Roby.

Salazar also addresses issues like bullying and drug and alcohol abuse. Salazer will speak be speaking Friday at Magic City campus, from 6:30-8:30 PM.
