"I usually try to park as far north as without having to move my car. Now, with the construction it's virtually impossible to get a parking spot after seven o'clock," says Mari Volk.
And that's exactly why the Bismarck Parking Authority is building a new downtown ramp.
"The project started earlier this summer, and it's on schedule to the best of my knowledge. And that means, hopefully, by about this time next year, 2014, late summer, we will be opening a 500 car parking garage to get 500 cars off the streets in downtown Bismarck," says Jim Christianson, Bismarck Parking Authority.
And even though winter is quickly approaching, those in charge say the weather shouldn't delay the project.
"The colder temperatures won't slow down the construction at all. As you can see, they're pouring the footings and foundations now. They'll be up, out of the ground by the time the cold weather gets here. And they'll just keep working right through the winter," says Christianson.
Finding a construction site in any downtown area can be difficult, but luckily that wasn't the case for the 6th and Thayer ramp.
"The site just kind of lent- it was vacant. There weren't very big buildings on it to remove, so the site lent itself to doing this project," says Christianson.
"It's strategically located. There's users all the way around: the city and county building, the county courthouse building, Sanford clinics, and offices. So, it's a good location for a ramp," says Christianson.
With our community growing as quickly as it is, a second parking ramp will eliminate some of the downtown parking congestion that everyone is experiencing.
