Push for Later School Start Date

Posted: Updated:
School starts Tuesday in Bismarck and in many other places across the state.
And wouldn't you know it, the high temperature could possibly reach one hundred degrees.
Some would say that's not very conducive to concentrating on school work.
A group of parents wants to place a measure on the statewide ballot that would require a later start date.

During the final days of summer, many kids are enjoying some time in the sun.
And some parents say they wish the kids didn't have to go back already.

"It's beautiful right now and we're going back to school and backing kids in their school clothes and getting them off to school and then in the spring we're sitting at home trying to think of something to do inside because it's raining and cold outside when they're done with school," says Bismarck parent Erin House.

Which is why she is in support of a movement to get a measure on the November 2014 ballot that if passed would require schools to start after labor day.

"We just want it so our kids can enjoy and the families can enjoy the latter part of the summer. Simple," says co-sponsor Kelly Heinert.

The issue has been brought up and failed in past legislative sessions, including the most recent one. Which is why they are taking the issue to the voters and to do that they need to collect 13 thousand 500 signatures.

"I think that's the North Dakota spirit. Just finally we had it, we're going to do something ourselves and let the people decide. That's why we would love to get it on that November 14 ballot. It's a big election and everyone will have a great opportunity to express their opinion at that point," says Heinert.

The Century High football coach says a later start date would have some pro's and con's.

"It would give us a lot more time per say as far as just getting the kids prepared for their first game. This year it's going to be real tight. We don't have as many practices. So we're trying to cram more in," says Ron Wingenbach.

But he says it would take some getting used to, since many students and parents enjoy the school year ending before memorial day.

Wingenbach says he doesn't believe a later start date would have too much of an impact of sports.
He says the schedule would remain the same since championship dates are pre-set and they would have just one or two games before school starts.
