Fire Department Gets Hands-On Training

Posted: Updated:

This building on Summit Boulevard has been many things over the years: a craft store, a home, an auction house, but has sat vacant now for several years. But it's making one last stand as a training grounds for the Bismarck Fire Department.

"It's like an ultimate classroom in there," says firefighter Justin Durham.

The building, owned by the Bank of North Dakota, is going to be torn down this fall.
But before it is, the fire department is taking over, using the space for valuable training.

"There's certain training you can't do around your fire station.  It's nice to go into a building and work," says Captain Jesse Smith.

They've used the space for search and rescue training, used smoke machines to lower visibility to simulate smoke from a fire and set up obstacle courses to build firefighter confidence.

"Out here we can play and learn," says Smith.

In this exercise, they're practicing how to stabilize a building that's damaged by wind, or by a vehicle running into it.

"If we get called out to a scenario like this it's good to have some type of experience because this is the type of call we don't get all the time but if it does come we do need to know what to do and how to do it quickly," says Durham.

And when that does happen, they'll also have the confidence they need when responding to a call.
