Tech Talk: 3D Printer

Posted: Updated:

"When people come to see this printer they always want to take a look at the gear and then they're amazed at how those gears actually turn," says Assistant Professor Mark Steele.

This fall, students at Bismarck State College will be creating works of art. And if the art itself doesn't impress you, the technology behind it just might.

"Students can use this machine to create topographic relief maps based on aerial imagery," says Steele.

They can also create working models of pumps or wind turbines that can be taken apart and examined.
Students use programs like AutoCad and arch gis  to draw and scale the objects they want to print.
And the machine uses a powder to print a three dimensional object. It can print anything in any color that can fit in the eight by eight by ten inch bed.  It even gives you the option of a matte or glossy finish, and it takes about one hour per inch to build a model.

"I think the applications are endless really. So, whether it's educational purposes or industry, I think that any company that's building something that wants a scale mock-up or model prior to going into production would use something like this to check for mistakes or change their design element before they actually produce that object," says Steele.

...Giving students a chance to learn a real-world skill set.
