New Ward Co. Courthouse Underway

Posted: Updated:

It's taken more than 10 years, but plans for a new Ward County Court house and Administration building are now moving forward.

Earlier today Ward County Commissioners awarded a bid to Mattson Construction for the building project.  It took more than an hour of discussion for commissioners to agree on a $16.5 Million Dollar plan for the new building, more than a million dollars over their initial budget of $15.3 Million Dollars.  The new courthouse building will include some features like an additional 4th floor, and skywalk joining the courthouse and new county jail.

The biggest obstacle for some commission members was whether or not to include space for the Ward County library on the first floor, "The future is now, we started this project 10 years ago.  We have advanced in the last 2 years way beyond and I do think that we need to do that full build out and the library will be there now, it may be temporary, but then we have that facility for the future," said Shelly Weppler, a member of the Ward County Commission.

The project plan was passed with a 3 to 2 vote. The commission hopes to break ground on the new building before the winter months.
