Beauty Knows No Age

Posted: Updated:

For the last eight years, Carrie Thorson has visited Hair We Go in Mandan to have her hair washed and set. She shows up every Friday at 9:00 a.m.

"I always get here before nine, when my appointment is at nine. Jackie is always here so she starts in on me," says Carrie.

Even more remarkable, Carrie turned 103 years old last week.

"She said her pastor asked her how it felt to be a 103, and she said not much different than 102," says stylist Jackie Hulm.

Not surprisingly, she's outlived several family members, so the friendships she cherishes are the friendships she has with the girls at the salon.

"Oh yes, oh yes, we're very good friends. They've been up to my apartment to visit me," says Carrie.

"Not everyone can say they know anyone who is 103. Much less work with them on a weekly basis. We all just love her," says Jackie.

And when she comes in, Jackie always knows exactly what she wants done with her hair.

"Every three months, we perm it, and color it and set it. And then, on a weekly basis, I just do the shampoo set where I roll it in rollers and then comb it out for her," says Jackie.

And when she's all done she pays and sets her next appointment. Then, gets in her car and drives herself to the grocery store.

"We watch her when she leaves here. She'll never go out on to the main road right away. She'll go through our driveway. And then, you got a much better view from both ways. And she'll look at least twice each way before she'll go on out and head west to the grocery store," says Jackie.

And rain, shine or even snow, she'll drive herself back next week.
