Farmers Reap Benefits

Posted: Updated:

This golden wheat is turning into green as farmers are finishing up their harvest.

"The quality is really good, the test weight is good, protein's over the 14 mark so we're really happy," says Michael Schmitcke.

Michael Schmitcke is busy running grain trucks back and forth from his field to the elevator 10 miles away, as his father and brother continue to run the combines.

"The weather is excellent for the garin harvest, but not so good for drivers."

But he's glad to be busy. They started the harvest in their worst wheat fields, working their way toward the best. Now, they're wrapping up this year's spring wheat harvest, finishing with yields in the mid-60 bushels an acre.

"We were a little worried we didn't get the rain but we must have had just enough to get us there," says Schmitcke.

He says they were fortunate that planting in late April worked out this year. While they did battle disease early on, because of a wet May, it turns out their gamble paid off.

"The ground was really cold, we weren't sure if it was time yet or not.  But it seems the later the wheat, the thinner it got, so we were pretty lucky."

And now, while it's hard work, they're ready to sit back and enjoy the harvest.

"It's the time of the year you wait for as a farmer when you harvest and put your grain in the bin.  That's a good feeling," says Schmitcke.

Once they wrap up with wheat, it's time to wait and watch their corn and sunflower fields continue to grow.
