Dickinson Downtown Planning Committee Elects Steering Committee

Posted: Updated:

It hasn't always been a thriving city center, but Dickinson's downtown is now getting more activity, thanks to a group of residents and business owners.

"It's purpose was to show that events can take place in Downtown Dickinson and be very successful in a big way," says committee member Kevin Holten.

Earlier this month, the Dickinson Downtown Planning Association elected a steering committee to formally organize the new association.

"Right now, it's just a couple of businesses getting together and trying to do it on their own and that's what a downtown association will be able to do, is have an organizational structure with a volunteer system built in," says Dickinson Chamber of Commerce executive director Cooper Whitman.

And as the city's Alive at Five event ends for the summer this week, the association is gearing up to bring more events to the city's center.

"To me, Alive at Five was kind of the catalyst for all the downtown revitalization efforts that are going on," says Whitman.

And downtown store owners say these events have been good for business.

"It's affected us real well. There's a lot more people," says Free Spirit Boutique owner Jewell Cox.

Those on the steering committee know the only way to keep the shopping traffic up downtown is through a focused association.

"It's more the job of the downtown association to publicize it, to get the community involved, because it will not be successful unless the entire community is involved," says Holten.

And some members of the association say they believe more community events downtown will help residents and businesses alike.

"A thriving downtown benefits everybody, whether you're in the downtown or not. Because downtowns are a cultural core, they're an icon," says Whitman.
