European Durum Team Visits Minot

Posted: Updated:

North Dakota is one of the largest producers of durum wheat in the United States.  And, today, a European Durum team was in Minot to check out and learn more about the 2013 crop.

rom Italy to Portugal and even Germany, European durum millers and pasta processors from around the world were in Minot to learn more about the state's durum crop.

"They are large users of durum.  The 3 countries combined are about a 20 million bushel market for U.S. durum, so very important customers," says marketing specialist Erica Olson, North Dakota Wheat Commission.

According to Olson, the European region as a whole accounts for slightly more than one-half of the United States durum exports annually.

"We are buying about 1.3 million tons of wheat and 2 thousand tons of durum wheat and so, we buy a lot of wheat from the U.S," explains procurement manager Frank Haack, Kampffmeyer Milling Group.

To better meet the demands of the customers, the U.S. Wheat Associates along with the North Dakota Wheat Commission teamed up to give European Durum Team an up close and personal look new durum research, which will hopefully increase the U.S. market share in the region in years to come.

"We are working to meet the needs.  We're working with our customers.  That's very beneficial for us," says Olson.

The team came out to the field to check out all of the varieties of durum wheat produced, right here, in North Dakota.

"They are very quality conscious buyers and so, it's important for them to understand what type of durum they are going to get," explains Olson.

"It's an opportunity to go out there in the field to learn about the different varieties that you have. It's good to see that the new varieties that the United States wheat this state is studying in order to improve the quality of wheat," says industrial deputy director Rodrigo Cerejeira, Cerealis Produtos Alimentares S.A.

By showing the team North Dakota's commitment to growing a quality durum crop, Olson hopes the team will go back to their European countries and continue to do business with the United States where durum wheat is available to them.

The team will also visit Montana and the desert durum region of Arizona and California.

Italy is the largest single market for U.S. in durum, while Portugal and Germany are among the top ten markets.
