Highway Patrol Investigates Prison Stabbing

Posted: Updated:

The Highway Patrol is investigating how an inmate at the state penitentiary was able to manipulate his door to open so he could attack a correctional officer.

Capt. Kyle Kirchmeier says John Bridges somehow got a hold of a piece of metal in the prison and used it to make a shank. He then slipped an envelope under the door to his cell in the administrative segregation unit of the prison Sunday night.
That unit is the most secure part of the penitentiary, often referred to as a "prison within a prison."

When a correctional officer came to pick up the envelope, Bridges then forced the door open, pushed the officer to the ground and assaulted him. The officer was able to fight Bridges off and get out of the unit, leaving Bridges locked inside. Kirchmeier says the officer was very lucky, and was able to return to work yesterday.

Bridges is serving a life sentence for kidnapping and murdering Lee Clay in the backseat of his car last summer.

The assault is still under investigation, and once complete, the report will be sent to the Burleigh County State's Attorney for review and possible charges.
