Inside Business: Mandan Walmart

Posted: Updated:

The carts are lined up in neat rows, waiting for the first customers to arrive early this September.

"There's definitely a lot of excitement around the store coming in.  From what I understand it's something Mandan's been looking for awhile.  They're excited to have us come in," says Andrew.

This will be the third Super Walmart in the Bismarck-Mandan area, but the first in Mandan. At 157,000 square feet, the store is about 50,000 square feet smaller than its counterparts on the other side of the river. While the store is brand-new, many of its 300 associates will already have experience with the Walmart brand and they will have an opportunity to help train new employees.

"This has given Mandan residents who work in the Bismarck stores an opportunity to transfer over and not only make it easier for them but also its helped us serve a need as far as training and teaching and having some of that experience in house," says Andrew.

The layout of the store is slightly different, as designs change to fit what customers are looking for. The use of energy-efficient building technologies is also changing. One of the unique energy saving features of this store are the display cases with LED lights that light up when customers walk by, and shut off when nobody's in the aisle.

But that's not the only cool thing. The mechanical system is designed to capture heat from the display fixtures and use it for hot water needs. Even the floors are environmentally friendly.

"The floors were constructed with recycled materials.  There's very low maintenance on them," says Andrew

Coppersmith says the store will be a great opportunity for the community and will add to the more than $54.3 million of sales tax revenue already generated by Walmart in the state.
