Hotel Occupancy Rates Decrease in Dickinson

Posted: Updated:

In Dickinson, hotels are more like homes.

"Obviously the last two years, we've had a tight crunch on rooms because of long-term construction workers and crews that are coming in long-term contracts," says Dickinson Visitors Bureau executive director Terri Thiel.

But July 2013 occupancy rates are showing that hotels no longer have that crunch.

"In '11 and '12 it was quite high. You know during the summer months it was in probably the mid-90s. Now for July we're dropping in that right around 72-percent," says Thiel.

Between construction and new apartments, it seems Dickinson is catching up to the population growth.

"I think the occupancy has gone down because the housing has caught up. And so we see some of the regular workers and things going into actual housing instead of using hotels," says Dickinson Comfort Inn general manager Melissa Johnson.

That means hotels can have more room for new business.

"We've seen a lot more leisure travel, I've surveyed the hotels and they're seeing families coming back now," says Thiel.

But families are just the beginning. The Visitors Bureau and hotel managers want to see more group events come to Dickinson.

"Hopefully it helps the CVB bring in more tournaments, more conventions and things like that because we have the availability and we have the facilities to host those things," says Johnson.

And that availability is just the first step to getting tourists to Dickinson.

"We want people to know that Dickinson is open for business. "
